About Us

Welcome, and thanks for visiting our WEB site . . .

The faith family of St. Matthews Baptist Church worships and ministers so that every person may experience God’s love. We are a loving faith community where hurts are healed and hopes are built. We are a five-generation congregation who pursues local & global ministries. We are an imperfect people saved by a perfect God who makes it possible for us to daily progress into Christ-likeness. Through God’s empowerment, the people of St. Matthews Baptist Church are making a gospel difference so people can live better lives. God is our hope. With that relationship secure, everything else falls into place, including the circumstances in which we live.

As the pastor of St. Matthews Baptist Church , I live in awesome respect for the happenings which shape us. Each day is a living experiment in God’s presence. As a five-generation church family, we provide unique opportunities for all ages and stages. Our WEB address provides an overview of our ministries which exist to help people experience God’s best for their lives.

Please tell us how we may assist you in your spiritual journey. Together we are faith partners in God’s world.

God’s best for you,

Pastor Leslie Hollon

OUR FOCUS

  • People join SMBC for three basic reasons:

1. To grow spiritually for life applications
2. To make spiritual friends and experience community
3. To make a gospel difference in the world

  • We are guided by Six Working Principles . . .

We extend the love of Christ by:

Growing in love for God with all our mind, heart, spirit and body; to love others and ourselves.

Worshiping with our church family so God’s presence may mutually shape us.

Sharing our spiritual gifts for world shaping ministry.

Participating in community for the benefit of friendship and spiritual growth.

Inviting friends to experience God’s gift of salvation.

Giving of time and finances so God’s plans will be achieved.

  • Which enables us to fulfill our mission statement:

Through Christ, St. Matthews Baptist Church ministers with hope and compassion. We are a nurturing faith community where individuals experience God. Joyfully, we extend the love of Christ in Kentuckiana, the United States and our world.

  • Twelve basic Biblical passages that increase our knowledge in knowing God’s best for our lives: (Pray your way through as you read these promises.)

Genesis 1-11; Psalm 8

(Being made in God’s image, our happiness depends on living as faith partners in God’s world. These passages show the conscious and unconscious content of our human nature.)

Luke 15 (Parables of salvation)

John 3:1-18 (The “born-again” experience)

Psalm 23 (The rhythm of faith)

Mark 12:28 -32 (The Great Commandment)

I Corinthians 13 (The character of love)

Luke 10:25-37 (The work of love--mercy)

Galatians 5:22-23 (Fruit of the Spirit)

Romans 12 (Holiness & Spiritual Gifts)

Matthew 5-7 (Jesus’ Character & Our Happiness Formula)

Matthew 25 (Parables of Eternal Judgment)

Matthew 28:16-20 (The Great Commission)

  • Our essential task is to introduce people to God’s salvation through Christ and to develop people in their faith. Our ultimate vision is accomplished by our serving for God’s will to be done on earth as it is in heaven. This vision is the fulfillment of our having the attitudes and abilities to:

    1. Pray & meditate effectively

    2. Apply Christian virtue in our personal lives

    3. Experience the Holy Spirit’s empowerment in our daily lives

    4. Be involved with social justice through acts of Christian compassion

    5. Meaningfully study the Bible and share our faith in Christ

    6. Be Christian friends to each other and help to build our church into a
        passionate Christian community

    7. Build life skills as Christians in the everyday areas of life.

Our lives are stirred by the noble calling of following Christ into the bold challenges of the 21st century.
